Galewood's Tree Canopy Initiative Continues to Grow as Fall Season Arrives
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·
Galewood's tree canopy is getting greener thanks to a successful federal grant program through the USDA. The initiative, spearheaded by Galewood Neighbors, Inc., is part of a city-wide effort to increase the tree canopy in Chicago, providing numerous benefits to health, environment, economy, and society.
With over 100 trees already planted throughout the neighborhood, the program continues to accept requests despite the original grant period ending in June 2025. Residents interested in receiving a free tree can email [email protected] for more information. The organization is also seeking volunteers for opportunities at Rutherford Sayre Park, encouraging community involvement in maintaining local green spaces.
Beyond tree planting, Galewood residents can enjoy the neighborhood's abundant outdoor spaces this fall. Amundsen Park offers a state-of-the-art track and sports fields, while Rutherford Sayre Natural Area features a historic field house, baseball diamonds, and a five-acre natural space with walking paths that showcase what the Illinois prairie looked like before development. As temperatures cool, now is the perfect time to explore these community treasures and get involved with local conservation efforts.
