Historic Pioneer Arcade Transformation Set to Begin in Humboldt Park Next Month
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Humboldt Park ·
Humboldt Park's century-old Pioneer Arcade building is finally set to begin its transformation into affordable senior housing next month. The Community Development Commission recently approved
The Spanish Baroque Revival-style building at 1539 N. Pulaski Road, once a vibrant bowling alley and billiards spot in the 1920s, will be converted into a 61-unit affordable senior housing complex. The ivory-colored terra-cotta facade, designed by Danish-born Chicago architect Jens J. Jensen, has been vacant for over a decade but received landmark status in January 2023. The building represents an important piece of neighborhood history, as commercial recreation centers like the Pioneer Arcade were popular family-friendly venues during Prohibition.
Meanwhile, residents looking for cultural activities can mark their calendars for the 3rd annual Chicago Latino Dance Festival coming to Humboldt Park on October 5th. The International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago will present free dance performances showcasing traditional, popular, and contemporary styles from across Latin America, Spain, and Portugal at the Humboldt Park Field House as part of the Nights Out In The Parks program. Join your neighbors for this celebration of culture and movement while witnessing the exciting revitalization efforts transforming our community.
