National Public Housing Museum Opens Doors in Near West Side This Weekend

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Near West Side ·

The Near West Side welcomes a significant cultural addition this weekend as the National Public Housing Museum officially opens its doors on Friday, October 17, 2025. Located in a historic building on Taylor Street, the museum is one of 30 new sites featured in this year's Open House Chicago event taking place October 18-19.

The museum joins other Near West Side newcomers including Four Star Mushrooms, an urban farming initiative focused on sustainable food systems that's helping transform the neighborhood's approach to local food production. "These new cultural spaces highlight the continued revitalization of our community," noted a representative from the West Central Association Chamber of Commerce.

Residents looking to explore the neighborhood's architectural gems can use the museum as one of the event's official visitor hubs, with free Wi-Fi, restrooms, and information about other nearby sites. Near West Side development continues to boom with several residential projects underway, including the recently completed Westhaven Park Station at 145 N. Damen Avenue, which brings 96 mixed-income housing units to the area.

Community members interested in learning more about these new additions are encouraged to attend the neighborhood tour organized by Open House Chicago volunteers or visit the West Side United website for information about upcoming community events.
