Pilsen Celebrates Major Affordable Housing Milestone as Casa Yucatán Breaks Ground

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Pilsen ·

Local officials and nonprofit leaders recently broke ground on Casa Yucatán, a development bringing nearly 100 affordable apartments to Pilsen. The Resurrection Project, a social services and housing nonprofit, is transforming a lot at 1609 W. 21st Place into an eight-story building with 98 affordable apartments.

The development will provide affordable rental homes for households earning between 30% and 70% of the Area Median Income (AMI), with rents ranging from $551 to

,768 monthly. This project represents a pivotal moment in the city's efforts to ensure long-term residents aren't displaced by rising costs in a neighborhood where rental costs have increased by 40 percent between 2015 and 2023. The complex will feature 38 one-bedroom, 34 two-bedroom, and 26 three-bedroom apartments, with amenities including a multi-purpose room, training center, reading room, a courtyard with a playground, and a green rooftop.

The $62 million development will transform a long-vacant lot into a community center and is a significant investment in Pilsen's future, ensuring it remains a diverse and accessible community for all. The project received

5.8 million in financing from the city's
.25 billion Housing and Economic Development Bond, with construction expected to be completed by fall 2026. Residents interested in applying for an apartment at Casa Yucatán should watch for announcements from The Resurrection Project next year as the project progresses.
