Award-Winning Sanders BBQ to Open 'Signature Restaurant' in Hyde Park

Days after being named one of America's 50 best restaurants by The New York Times, Sanders BBQ Supply Co. is bringing its acclaimed barbecue to Hyde Park. Chef-owner James Sanders has announced plans to open Sanders BBQ Prime in the space underneath The Promontory on Lake Park Avenue, describing the new location as his "signature restaurant."

Unlike the counter-service style of the original Beverly location, the Hyde Park restaurant will offer an "elevated twist" on barbecue classics. The menu will feature appetizers, steaks, plated dinners, and desserts, with diners receiving complimentary beef tallow smoked popcorn upon arrival. The University of Chicago, which owns the building, expressed excitement about the addition, stating they're "happy to partner with this great local restaurant to provide additional dining opportunities on the 53rd Street corridor."

The new restaurant is among the most anticipated openings for 2026, with a projected launch in about six months. The timing coincides with the recent announcement that The Promontory music venue will close following its New Year's Eve party, though the closure won't affect Sanders' plans for the building's first floor. Hyde Park residents and barbecue enthusiasts should mark their calendars for this exciting addition to the neighborhood's dining scene.
