Historic DuSable Park Gets Green Light from Chicago Plan Commission

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Streeterville ·

The long-awaited DuSable Park has taken a significant step toward reality as the Chicago Plan Commission approved plans for the 3.4-acre peninsula at 451 North DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Streeterville last Thursday. The approved design includes a boardwalk, educational pavilion, and abundant green space along the lakefront.

The park, bound by the Chicago River, Ogden Slip and Lake Michigan, will honor Chicago's founder Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, who established a trading post just west of the park site. The Chicago Park District estimates the project will cost

3 million, with Related Midwest—the developer currently building two residential towers at 400 N. Lake Shore Drive—contributing
0 million toward its development and leading the construction efforts.

At the center of the park will be a small plaza featuring a sculptural pavilion mimicking DuSable's original home. Visitors will enjoy features including a mural wall, an open lawn, a boardwalk framing the property, and public art—including a statue of DuSable himself. With City Council approval as the final step, the team hopes to break ground in spring 2026, with the park opening to the public by mid-2027. Streeterville residents and visitors are encouraged to stay updated on the project through community meetings as this long-envisioned public space finally moves toward completion.
