West Pullman Rallies as Government Shutdown Impacts Historic Park Sites

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Pullman ·

West Pullman neighborhood organizations are stepping up to ensure visitors can still experience the area's rich history despite the ongoing federal government shutdown affecting Pullman National Historical Park. The shutdown, now in its third week, has forced the closure of the iconic Administration Clock Tower Building and furloughed the park's seven rangers who typically provide tours and educational programming.

As visitors explored the neighborhood during the recent 52nd annual Historic Pullman House Tour on October 10-11, organizers reported a 30% decrease in ticket sales, which they attribute to confusion about whether the event was canceled due to the shutdown. "Everyone sees there's a closed sign across the street," explained Lynn McClure, vice president of the Historic Pullman Foundation. However, community spirit remains strong as West Pullman prepares to welcome more visitors this Saturday during Chicago Architecture Foundation's Open House Chicago 2025. Several significant buildings will be featured, including the Historic Pullman Foundation headquarters, Greater Tabernacle Cathedral, Pullman Artspace Lofts, and Pullman Tech Workshop. While the National Park Service visitor center inside the Clock Tower remains closed, residents can still access other sites including the grounds around the Clock Tower, the Exhibit Hall, and the Florence Lowden Miller Center.

West Pullman residents are encouraged to volunteer as neighborhood ambassadors during the Open House event to help direct visitors and share local knowledge about the historic district. For information on how to get involved, contact the Historic Pullman Foundation or attend the community briefing Thursday evening at the Florence Lowden Miller Center.
