Humboldt Park Boathouse Set for Revival with New All-Day Cafe and Beer Garden
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Humboldt Park ·
Developers are looking to bring new life to the historic Humboldt Park Boathouse with plans to open an all-day cafe featuring a beer garden at the underused space. The team behind Lincoln Park's North Pond restaurant has proposed Cafe Valera for the boathouse, which hasn't had a food concessionaire since 2020.
The proposal envisions a grab-and-go cafe offering pastries, drinks, and hand-held items like empanadas, sandwiches, Cubano sliders, and hot dogs—all with a focus on sustainability using ingredients from local farmers and businesses. The cafe would utilize about a third of the veranda and patio space, with seating and a small area for live music. As part of the plan, the North Pond team would renovate the kitchen, which needs significant updates including new flooring, wall upgrades, and equipment.
Alexander Gonzalez, one of the developers, plans to host community-oriented events such as farmers markets, art pop-ups, small music shows, and collaborations with local chefs. "What we want for this area is some sort of market that brings people into the space and draws attention to it," Gonzalez explained at a recent community meeting. The proposed cafe would serve as a "third space" for residents while creating approximately 22 jobs for neighborhood residents. The team hopes to host job fairs to attract local talent if the proposal is approved. Residents can share feedback on the proposal through local advisory council meetings as the Park District evaluates community input before making a final decision.
