New Nature Play Space Breaking Ground at Edgewater's Senn Park This Fall

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Edgewater ·

After years of planning, construction on Edgewater's new Senn Park Nature Play Space is set to begin this fall, transforming a section of one of the neighborhood's largest green spaces. The innovative playground will feature natural elements like logs, stones, and other materials that can be manipulated by children, creating a more interactive outdoor experience than traditional playgrounds.

The project received crucial funding through the 48th Ward's participatory budgeting process, with Alderperson Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth allocating $25,000 toward the nature-focused play area. Community input has been central to the design process, with the Chicago Park District's Nature Play Team partnering directly with Senn Park neighbors to create a space that supports positive, hands-on experiences in nature. Unlike standard playgrounds, this nature play space is designed specifically for interactive play with elements like sticks, leaves, acorns, and other "loose parts" that encourage creativity and exploration.

The new play area will be located in a grassy section next to Senn Park's existing playground near the corner of Elmdale and Greenview avenues. Similar nature-focused play areas have been successful at other northside parks, including Rogers Park's Leone Beach Park and West Ridge's Indian Boundary Park. Edgewater families are encouraged to visit the display panels at Broadway Armory to learn more about the project and share feedback before construction begins.
