Bronzeville Lakefront Megaproject Enters New Phase as Community Anticipates Economic Revival
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bronzeville ·
Construction is now underway on Bronzeville Lakefront, the ambitious $7 billion mixed-use megadevelopment transforming the 48.6-acre former Michael Reese Hospital site. The project, stretching from 26th Street to 31st Street and Martin Luther King Drive to Lake Park Avenue, will ultimately create 7.8 million square feet of residential, office and retail space.
The development's second phase, running from 2023 to 2041, will create 6.7 million square feet of retail, residential and mixed-use development. When completed, the project will feature retail and office spaces, a data center, artist housing, an entertainment district, and various public amenities. Developers have committed to making 20% of the project's 5,000 residential units affordable, while 10% of retail space will go to local "disadvantaged business owners" at 20% below market rates. The infrastructure improvements will bring "new, walkable, vibrant places" with wide sidewalks, bike lanes and public spaces to the area.
As one of the many ongoing efforts to revitalize this historic South Side neighborhood, Bronzeville Lakefront represents a major economic opportunity for residents and businesses alike. "It helps to boost the local economy through tourism, aiding in ongoing efforts to revitalize the area," notes Bernard Turner, Executive Director of the Bronzeville National Heritage Area commission, who encourages community members to participate in upcoming information sessions about construction progress and job opportunities connected to the development.
