McKinley Park's Bubbly Creek Transformation: New Floating Wetlands Create Biodiversity Hotspot

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Mckinley Park ·

The borderlands between McKinley Park and Bridgeport are experiencing an ecological renaissance as the Shedd Aquarium and Urban Rivers continue expanding their floating wetlands project along Bubbly Creek. The organizations recently added nearly 1,500 square feet of new habitat to complement the existing 3,000-square-foot installation created in 2022, transforming what was once an industrial waterway into a thriving ecosystem.

"By adding more natural greenery to the Chicago River, we aim to restore and preserve this vital resource for both people and wildlife," said Maggie Cooper, the Shedd Aquarium's manager of conservation action. Recent research has identified a surprising 24 fish species now spawning in the Chicago River system, with the floating wetlands providing crucial habitat for native wildlife. The newest installation includes 40 floating structures hosting native plant species that create refuge for fish, foraging grounds for birds, and food sources for insects.

Residents interested in experiencing this ecological revival can participate in Friday evening programs that include fishing and paddling opportunities along Bubbly Creek. "One of the biggest things locals can do is just to go outside and play on the river," said Kate Eakin, McKinley Park Development Council President. "The more people are using the waterfront, the easier it is to say we need more of it."
