West Oakland Residents to Shape Future of I-980 Corridor at Community Block Party This Saturday
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Oakland ·
A special community block party will take place in West Oakland this Saturday, October 25, inviting residents to share their input on the future of the I-980 corridor. The event, connected to the Vision 980 program led by Caltrans, will feature film screenings, oral history recordings, and interactive Minecraft-style modeling to help visualize potential changes to the freeway that has long divided West Oakland from downtown.
One of the most compelling features of Saturday's gathering will be a "data station" where attendees can learn about how freeway construction, redlining, and bank disinvestment historically impacted West Oakland communities. Local college students have been working on this data presentation for several months, empowering participants to understand past harms and imagine how future investments could restore value to the neighborhood. This community engagement follows Caltrans' recent release of survey results showing strong support for anti-displacement guarantees and affordable housing commitments in any new development along the corridor.
The block party will proceed rain or shine, with indoor spaces available as backup in case of inclement weather. Randolph Belle, who is helping coordinate the event, expressed excitement about West Oakland residents engaging with the program. "We're just going to go for it," Belle said, emphasizing the importance of community participation in shaping the corridor's future. Residents are encouraged to attend this neighborhood event to ensure their voices are heard in decisions that will impact Oakland's landscape for generations to come.
