Emanuel Congregation Reveals Ambitious Lakefront Development Plans for Edgewater Campus

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Edgewater ·

The historic Emanuel Congregation at 5959 North Sheridan Road has unveiled exciting redevelopment plans that could transform a prime piece of Edgewater's lakefront property. The synagogue, which dates back to 1955, is seeking to downsize from its oversized facility into a more modern, 16,000-square-foot building on the eastern portion of its campus, leaving significant space for potential residential development.

Architecture firm Eckenhoff Saunders presented 16 different massing concepts for the property during a recent congregation meeting, with options ranging from one to three towers. The first phase would relocate the site's main access from Sheridan Road to Thorndale Avenue, providing a stoplight for safer traffic flow. The new synagogue would be situated on the east end of the site, preserving public access to a small lakefront path.

The project has already generated significant community interest, with local YIMBY (Yes In My Back Yard) advocates supporting the development on this prime lakefront location. Residents interested in learning more about this transformative project are encouraged to attend upcoming community meetings where more detailed plans will be presented. This redevelopment represents a significant opportunity for new housing in one of Edgewater's most scenic locations.
