Community to Vote on New Mural Design for Damen-Leland People Space in Ravenswood

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Ravenswood ·

Ravenswood residents have a unique opportunity to shape their neighborhood's visual identity as voting opens for a new mural project at the intersection of Damen and Leland avenues. The project aims to enhance connections between local artists and residents, showcase community creativity, and encourage use of the popular Damen Leland People Space.

Among the competing designs is Alex Perkins' proposal, which incorporates symbols specific to Ravenswood history, including the glockenspiel representing the former J.C. Deagan Musical Instrument Company on Berteau. Perkins' design also features nods to local businesses such as Margie's Candies, Urban Pooch, Spiteful Brewing, and cultural institutions like Ravenswood Elementary and All Saints Episcopal Church. The artist even included references to neighborhood public art, like the cicada sculptures from 2024. Another finalist is Jen Farrell of Starshaped Press, whose submission 'Under the Tree' draws on her 25 years in the community. Her design reflects Ravenswood's resilient greenery and diverse architectural styles with a color palette designed to harmonize with the existing People Space.

Residents are encouraged to cast their votes for their favorite design on the Greater Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce website. This project is part of the neighborhood's ongoing People Spaces initiative, which has transformed several areas into vibrant community gathering spots since its inception in 2020.
