West Pullman Solar Plant Celebrates Milestone as Community Garden Initiative Expands

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Pullman ·

West Pullman continues to lead Chicago's renewable energy efforts with its pioneering 10 MW urban photovoltaic solar plant, the largest of its kind in the United States. The impressive facility, spanning 39 acres with 32,800 solar panels, generates enough power to supply approximately 1,500 Midwest homes. Building on this green legacy, residents can now take advantage of the Illinois Solar for All program, which makes rooftop solar installations nearly free for many Chicago residents and non-profits like churches, though awareness of these opportunities remains limited in the neighborhood.

The community's environmental transformation continues as residents partner with the EPA to convert former brownfields into thriving community gardens. These green initiatives complement other neighborhood improvements planned for 2026, including Habitat For Humanity's ongoing construction of single-family homes throughout West Pullman and the extension of Cottage Grove Avenue southbound from E 115th Street to E 130th Street with light and visual enhancements. Residents can also look forward to train station improvements along E 115th Street and S. Cottage Grove Avenue, which will be accompanied by retail development. Interested community members can learn more about solar energy options and ongoing green initiatives at the next West Pullman Neighborhood Association meeting on Wednesday at the local library branch.
