Chicago Market Co-op Set for Fall 2025 Opening in Historic Uptown Wilson Station

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Uptown ·

The long-awaited Chicago Market, a community-owned grocery co-op, is on track to open its doors in Uptown's historic Gerber Building this fall. After receiving construction permits earlier this year, the

2 million project at the former Wilson CTA station is entering its final phase of development, bringing a decade-long community vision closer to reality.

Located at the corner of Wilson and Broadway, the 13,000-square-foot market will feature locally-sourced organic produce, sustainably-farmed meat and dairy products, along with prepared foods and a coffee bar. What makes this project unique is its cooperative ownership model – over 2,400 community members have purchased shares in the business, making it one of the largest co-ops in the country. The market plans to create 70 jobs initially, with potential to expand to 160 positions within five years, prioritizing hiring from within the neighborhood.

Uptown residents eager to support this community-driven initiative can become member-owners through the Chicago Market website or attend upcoming informational sessions. Even non-members will be welcome to shop when doors open in September. "This isn't just another grocery store," says Dan Arnett, the market's manager. "It's a genuine democracy where there is one vote per shareholder," making it a true reflection of Uptown's diverse community values.
