Trader Joe's Set to Transform Fulton Market's Retail Landscape in 2027
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Loop ·
The West Loop's Fulton Market district is poised for a significant retail boost with confirmation that Trader Joe's will anchor the ground floor of a planned 25-story apartment tower at 170 N. May Street. The mixed-use development, bounded by Lake Street to the north and Randolph Street to the south, represents the first phase of a two-tower proposal led by LG Development and will join other towers rising in this rapidly evolving neighborhood.
Designed by local firm bKL Architecture and approved by the city in 2024, the development will feature a site-wide podium containing 20,000 square feet of commercial space, with Trader Joe's occupying 17,000 square feet. Inside the residential tower will be 287 units with a mix of studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom layouts, of which 57 will be designated as affordable housing. With groundbreaking set for early 2026 and completion estimated for the second half of 2027, this development demonstrates the neighborhood's continued evolution from industrial corridor to vibrant urban community.
West Loop residents interested in following this development can attend upcoming community meetings hosted by the West Central Association or Neighbors of West Loop, where updates on this and other neighborhood projects are regularly shared. The arrival of Trader Joe's joins other recent retail additions to the area, further cementing Fulton Market's status as one of Chicago's most dynamic mixed-use districts.
