Northwestern Memorial Unveils Plans for State-of-the-Art Cancer Tower in Streeterville
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Streeterville ·
Northwestern Memorial Hospital has revealed exciting plans for a major expansion of its Streeterville campus with a new state-of-the-art medical tower at 333 East Huron Street. The 1.2-million-square-foot facility, designed by global architecture firm Perkins & Will, will primarily consolidate the hospital's cancer care services currently spread across five different buildings.
The ambitious project, which could begin construction in 2027 and be completed by 2031, will include up to 278 medical-surgical beds and 36 intensive care unit beds. According to hospital officials, the new tower will help address current capacity constraints that have led to emergency department backups and excessive wait times. The development will occupy the western two-thirds of a long-vacant site that once housed the Lakeside Veterans Affairs Hospital, which was demolished in 2009, while preserving the eastern portion for future expansion.
At a recent community meeting, Streeterville residents expressed support for the project while raising questions about green space preservation during development. Ald. Brian Hopkins assured neighbors that their input would shape the final plans, stating "What you're doing matters. There are no foregone conclusions here." Residents interested in learning more about the project can attend upcoming community meetings where Northwestern will continue to share updates on this transformative addition to the neighborhood's world-class medical district.
