Palmer Square Park Celebrates First Season as Chicago's Official Arboretum with Winter Programs

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·

Palmer Square Park, located at 2200 N. Kedzie Ave., recently made history by becoming the first Chicago Park District property to receive arboretum accreditation from the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program, which is administered by the Morton Arboretum in suburban Lisle. This prestigious designation recognizes the park as a living museum of trees and other woody plants, with a commitment to caring for the collection and educating the public about trees.

The newly designated arboretum status gives more weight to tree preservation and education in the Palmer Square area. With more species in the park now labeled, the arboretum can host high school tours, guided walks and special park district events focused on the diverse tree collection. The park features an impressive collection of over 28 varieties of trees, including a historic elm grove, making it a perfect outdoor classroom for nature enthusiasts. To celebrate this milestone, the Palmer Square Park Advisory Council has announced plans for winter programming that will highlight the park's arboretum status while bringing the community together during the colder months.

Residents are encouraged to visit Palmer Square Park throughout November and December to experience the beauty of the arboretum's winter landscape. Information about upcoming winter events and educational programs can be found on the Palmer Square Park Advisory Council website. The council also welcomes volunteers interested in helping maintain and preserve this newly recognized natural treasure in the heart of our neighborhood.
