South Side Community Arts Center Begins Expansion as New Restaurants Enhance Bronzeville's Cultural Scene

Construction has officially begun on the highly anticipated expansion of the South Side Community Arts Center in Bronzeville, with demolition and foundation permits recently issued for the historic site at 3831 S. Michigan. The project will transform the property by combining the existing midblock site with two lots to the north and adding a three-story addition behind the landmarked home.
Meanwhile, Bronzeville's dining scene continues to evolve with the opening of Dixie Pura at 325 E. Pershing Road. The American Southern Southeast Asian eatery celebrated its grand opening in mid-October, bringing a unique culinary perspective to the neighborhood. Founded by Bronzeville native and chef Chloe Gould, the restaurant was inspired by her time teaching in Singapore after culinary school. Additionally, the long-awaited South Side debut for Ethiopian restaurant Demera is moving forward, with chef/owner Tigist Reda planning to open in the next 12-18 months at 4528 S. Cottage Grove Ave. The 7,000-square-foot dining room and rooftop will offer patrons plenty of space to enjoy authentic Ethiopian cuisine in the heart of Bronzeville.
