South Side Community Arts Center Begins Construction on 5 Million Expansion in BronzevilleBy Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bronzeville ·
A historic milestone for Bronzeville's cultural landscape is underway as demolition and foundation permits were recently issued for the highly anticipated expansion of the South Side Community Arts Center (SSCAC) at 3831 S. Michigan Avenue. The
5 million project will transform the property by combining the existing midblock site with two lots to the north and adding a three-story addition behind the landmarked home.Designed by Chicago-based Future Firm with wrkSHäp serving as preservation architects, the renovation will expand visitor capacity by 398% while honoring the building's historic character. The third level will feature a ballroom that can double as an open program area with upgraded audio/visual capabilities and a rooftop terrace offering spectacular views of the neighborhood. The building's facade will incorporate a custom perforated exterior panel system inspired by the pattern of nail holes found in the historic Margaret T. Burroughs Gallery, creating a symbolic link to the past while allowing dappled natural light to enter the Center.
Construction is expected to continue through late 2026, with the project team working closely with community stakeholders to ensure the development aligns with SSCAC's values of equity and community-based opportunities. Residents interested in learning more about the expansion can attend community information sessions or visit the SSCAC website for project updates and upcoming events celebrating Bronzeville's rich artistic heritage.
