Portage Park Residents Celebrate New Community Garden Initiative at November Planting Day

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Portage Park ·

The spirit of community beautification is thriving in Portage Park this week as local resident Josephine Christopher, known for her award-winning landscaping talents, leads a new neighborhood garden initiative. Christopher, whose yard recently won the Chicago Bungalow Association's Best Backyard Oasis award, has been transforming her Schorsch Village property for 15 years with stunning results.

The initiative kicks off at Portage Park's decorative gateway entrance at Irving Park Road and Central Avenue, where residents will enhance the already lush landscaping that makes this 38-acre green space a favorite spot for wedding ceremonies and special outdoor occasions. The project aims to capitalize on the park's natural, scenic beauty while creating more sustainable garden spaces throughout the neighborhood. Local businesses including Perkolator Cafe and Thrift & Thrive are supporting the effort by providing refreshments and gardening supplies for volunteers.

Residents interested in participating in future community gardening events should contact the Portage Park Neighborhood Association or attend their next meeting. The association welcomes all skill levels and hopes this initiative will foster greater neighborhood connection while continuing to beautify one of Chicago's most picturesque communities.
