Palmer Square's Arboretum Status Inspires Winter Nature Programs and Tree Education
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·
Palmer Square Park has made history by becoming the first Chicago Park District property to receive arboretum accreditation from the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program, which is administered by the Morton Arboretum in suburban Lisle. The nearly eight-acre park, which boasts 28 species of trees, earned this distinction as the Northwest Side's first urban arboretum in September, giving more weight to tree preservation and education in the area. The designation now allows for high school tours, guided walks and park district events focused on the diverse tree collection.
This recognition comes after decades of community effort. The Homeowners Association of Palmer Square has been working since 1980 to create a tree sanctuary in the park. When homeowner Steve Hier moved to the area and founded the association, the park had only about 37 trees. Through consistent planting efforts every spring and fall, funded by donations and fundraisers, the park now houses over 200 trees. As a Level I arboretum, Palmer Square Park's accreditation recognizes the park's commitment to growing and maintaining a thriving tree canopy and preserving a variety of tree species, including a historic elm grove.
Residents are encouraged to explore the park's newly labeled tree species collection throughout the winter months, with educational programs and guided tours being planned for early 2026. Community members interested in volunteering for tree preservation efforts or attending upcoming educational events should visit the Palmer Square Park Advisory Council website for more information.
