Pilsen's Carrera de los Muertos Breaks Records with 8,000 Runners in Show of Community Strength

The streets of Pilsen came alive last weekend as a record-breaking 8,000 participants gathered for the 18th annual Carrera de los Muertos (Race of the Dead). The beloved 5K race, which celebrates Día de los Muertos traditions, marked its largest turnout ever, becoming a powerful demonstration of unity and community strength.

Participants and spectators transformed the neighborhood into a vibrant celebration, starting at Benito Juarez High School and winding through Pilsen's colorful streets. This year's race featured special t-shirts depicting catrinas (skeletal figures) representing essential workers including paleteros and construction workers, celebrating the immigrant workforce. Race founder and director Carlos Jaramillo expressed being "overwhelmed with the support," noting the event's crucial economic impact on local businesses. The race serves as a fundraiser for United Neighborhood Organization's girls empowerment programs, including GirlsMPowered, which provides mentorship and STEM training for young Latinas.

Local business owners reported that "La Carrera" typically generates one of their highest-grossing days of the year, with participants and families filling cafes and taquerías throughout the neighborhood after the event. Residents who missed this year's celebration can mark their calendars for next November, when the tradition returns with music, entertainment, and community spirit that has made this cultural celebration a cornerstone of Pilsen's identity.
