Growing Home's Winter Market Returns to West Englewood: Urban Farm Extends Fresh Produce Access Year-Round

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Englewood ·

West Englewood residents will have continued access to fresh, locally-grown produce this winter as Growing Home announces the return of its Winter Market at the Wood Street Urban Farm. The USDA-Certified Organic urban farm, located at 5814 S. Wood Street, typically operates from February to November but is expanding its offerings to ensure year-round food access. Visitors can find a variety of produce including eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, onions, and garlic.

"Englewood is a food insecure neighborhood," explains Growing Home Farms and Program Manager Ezra Lee. "We distribute through our farmers market here, Green City Market, and also through wholesale partnerships." The organization believes everyone deserves to eat well and live in a vibrant, supported community, serving West Englewood through innovative employment training and access to local, healthy, affordable food.

The Winter Market is part of Growing Home's larger $20 million expansion project, which received a $5 million city grant. When completed, the expansion will double the capacity of their workforce development program to 160 people and allow for off-season growing indoors to provide healthy food year-round. Residents interested in learning more about the Winter Market hours or participating in Growing Home's programs can visit their website or stop by the Wood Street Urban Farm location.
