Washington Park Set to Welcome Major Healthcare Hub with 2025 Groundbreaking Ceremony

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·

Washington Park residents will soon benefit from a transformative healthcare development as the University of Chicago Medicine and City Colleges of Chicago prepare for a 2025 groundbreaking ceremony for their joint healthcare education complex on East Garfield Boulevard. The project features two state-of-the-art facilities: a clinical laboratory for UChicago Medicine and the Malcolm X College Learning Center, which will establish Chicago's first clinical lab technician program.

This healthcare hub will create approximately 600 jobs, including 200 newly created positions at UChicago Medicine, while the Malcolm X College Learning Center will serve up to 800 students annually. "This partnership will not only help address the immense unmet demand for health care professionals throughout the region, but through our efforts to educate, train, and employ individuals from our local communities, we are investing in the creation of a more robust service network," explained University of Chicago President Paul Alivisatos. The facilities will provide career pathways for South Side residents into positions paying $42,000-$80,000 annually – more than double the current median income for nearby residents.

Washington Park residents interested in healthcare career opportunities can learn more at the next community meeting, scheduled for the third Wednesday of the month at the Washington Park fieldhouse. Both facilities are expected to break ground in 2025 and open during the 2026-27 academic year, bringing new vitality to the neighborhood while addressing critical healthcare workforce needs.
