Lake View's Long-Awaited Dog Park Set for Spring 2026 Opening with Community-Driven Design

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Lake View ·

After years of organizing and fundraising, Lake View dog owners have cause for celebration as the neighborhood's first dedicated dog park is on track to begin construction this spring. The project, spearheaded by the Lakeview Dog Park Council, has completed its design phase and secured necessary approvals, with fundraising efforts nearing their goal. "It feels like next year is our year," said Danny Bernstein, president and founding member of the Council.

At 25,000 square feet, the new facility will become Chicago's second-largest dog park, second only to Montrose Beach's dog area. The park's design reflects extensive community input and site visits to other successful dog parks. The final plan includes a central artificial turf green surrounded by a paved walking loop, with wood chips and trees along the perimeter. The thoughtfully designed space will feature three shaded plazas with paver walls, a hard-top shelter with windbreak walls, and a separate dedicated area for small dogs with its own entrance. The park will also include a raised observation deck accessible to people with wheelchairs and strollers.

"We've kept our eye on the ball because we believe in what this means for Lakeview," Bernstein explained. "It's good for the dogs, but it's great for the people." Lake View residents interested in supporting the project's final fundraising phase can visit the Lakeview Dog Park website to purchase commemorative tiles or learn about sponsorship opportunities. The park is expected to open to the public in late 2026, bringing a vibrant new community gathering space to the neighborhood.
