Oakland's Green Renaissance: New Community Garden Program Launches at Mandrake Park

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Oakland ·

Oakland residents have a fresh opportunity to cultivate their green thumbs as the Chicago Park District announced the launch of a new community garden program at Mandrake Park on November 10, 2025. The initiative comes as part of the city's broader urban agriculture expansion plan, which aims to address food access challenges in South Side neighborhoods through resident-led growing spaces.

The Mandrake Park Community Garden will feature twenty raised garden beds, a rainwater collection system, and a dedicated composting area. Local organization Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO) has partnered with the Chicago Lights Urban Farm to provide gardening workshops and distribute starter seed kits to interested participants throughout the winter months. The program specifically prioritizes engaging Oakland's youth and senior residents in intergenerational knowledge-sharing around growing fresh produce.

"This garden represents another positive step in Oakland's continued renaissance," said community organizer Tamika Reynolds during the announcement event. Residents eager to participate in the upcoming growing season can register for plots beginning December 1 at the Oakland Community Center or through the Chicago Park District website. The garden initiative builds on Oakland's ongoing neighborhood revitalization efforts, including recent affordable housing developments concentrated in the flatlands area.
