Historic Auditorium Theatre Launches Ambitious Restoration Project to Revive Original 1889 Design Elements

The iconic Auditorium Theatre in Chicago's Loop has embarked on a significant restoration project that will bring back its original architectural splendor from 1889. The renovation, announced earlier this month, focuses on restoring the venue's stunning stained-glass skylight and atrium to their original glory, allowing sunlight to shine through the historic panels for the first time in the building's history.
Designed by legendary architects Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan, the stained-glass panels feature Sullivan's signature neo-Celtic style with organic shapes inspired by nature and elaborate knot patterns. According to Matt McNicholas, an architect and voluntary board member at the Auditorium Theatre, the panels were so impressive that they were exhibited at the 1889 Paris World's Fair, showcasing Chicago's architectural innovation. Unlike previous renovations that required full closure, this project will utilize modern systems to keep the theatre open for performances throughout the expected two-year restoration period, with completion targeted for fall 2027.
As one of the country's last remaining Adler and Sullivan buildings, the Auditorium Theatre's restoration represents the Loop's commitment to preserving its architectural heritage. Visitors can experience this National Historic Landmark while restoration work proceeds, witnessing firsthand the revival of one of Chicago's most treasured cultural venues and democratic performance spaces.
