Workshop Arts Collaborative Nears Completion as Creative Hub Takes Shape in Albany Park

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Albany Park ·

Albany Park's cultural landscape is getting a significant boost as the Workshop Arts Collaborative moves closer to reality, bringing new creative energy to the neighborhood. The project, which received a

.2 million city grant earlier this year, will transform a century-old vacant building at 3741-49 W. Lawrence Ave. into a vibrant community arts center.

The renovation will feature 12-14 soundproof rehearsal spaces, a flexible 2,200-square-foot event area for performances and workshops, and a storefront selling vintage instruments and art supplies. "We are particularly looking for arts and culture nonprofits, arts collectives, venue curators, music production studios and other folks that are open to collaboration and building community around the performing arts in Albany Park," said developer James Yelen, who is spearheading the $2.4 million project. The development follows an earlier $250,000 Equitable Transit-Oriented grant awarded to the project last year.

The project, which is still going through the 33rd Ward's community-driven zoning process, represents an exciting addition to Albany Park's growing reputation as a cultural destination where artists and creative enterprises are finding an enthusiastic and welcoming community.
