Pilsen's Penelope's Vegan Taqueria Launches Meal Ticket Program to Support Neighborhood Families

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Pilsen ·

Pilsen residents facing food insecurity have a new resource thanks to local restaurant Penelope's Vegan Taqueria, which recently launched an innovative community support initiative. The popular eatery has placed "meal tickets" on corners throughout 18th Street and outside grocery stores, allowing anyone in need to grab a ticket and redeem it for a warm meal at their Pilsen location.

Juan Lisandro Ramirez, chef and owner of Penelope's, has committed to serving free meals to children and pregnant women Monday through Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. at all three of his restaurant locations, including the Pilsen establishment. The meal options include two fried potato and veggie tacos or two quesadillas, each served with rice, beans, corn and a drink. "That's for anyone who is hungry and wants a hot meal," Ramirez explained, emphasizing the restaurant's open-door policy for those in need.

The initiative represents a growing trend of community-minded businesses in Pilsen taking action to support neighborhood residents. Community members interested in supporting this effort can visit Penelope's Vegan Taqueria in Pilsen to enjoy their regular menu items, with proceeds helping sustain their community outreach programs. The restaurant continues to serve as both a culinary destination and a vital community resource in one of Chicago's most vibrant neighborhoods.
