El Paseo Trail Revival: Pilsen Residents Shape Vision for New Green Space
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Pilsen ·
The long-awaited El Paseo Trail project in Pilsen is gaining new momentum as the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) recently revived discussions on transforming an abandoned BNSF railway into a vibrant community pathway. At a recent community meeting, Pilsen residents shared their visions for the proposed trail that would run from West 16th Street and South Sangamon Street to West Cermak Road and South Laflin Street.
Many locals expressed enthusiasm about the potential for additional green space in the neighborhood. Claudia Galeno-Sanchez of Women for Green Spaces highlighted the need for more natural areas, sharing her experience creating a butterfly sanctuary at her home. "There is no space for gardens," Galeno-Sanchez noted, emphasizing the environmental benefits the trail could bring. Meanwhile, David Herrera, a supporter of the project, believes El Paseo could enhance the community by fostering new local businesses and entertainment options, creating "a net benefit" for the neighborhood.
CDOT officials emphasized that the project remains in early planning stages, with a final framework not expected until 2026. Alderperson Byron Sigcho-Lopez noted this was "the first of many" community discussions, encouraging residents to participate in upcoming meetings to ensure the trail reflects the neighborhood's cultural heritage and addresses concerns about displacement. Pilsen residents interested in contributing to the project's development should watch for announcements of future community meetings.
