Lake View Set to Welcome 'The Checkout': Chicago's First North Side Classical Music Venue

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Lake View ·

Lake View residents will soon have a unique cultural destination as Access Contemporary Music (ACM) progresses on construction of what will become the first venue on Chicago's North Side devoted to classical music. Named 'The Checkout' as a playful nod to the building's former life as a 7-Eleven, the innovative space at 4116 N. Clark Street aims to make classical music more accessible to the community.

The hybrid venue, designed by Chicago-based JDJ Architects, will feature four teaching rooms accommodating 60-70 students, along with performance space and a bar. "We want to have a year-round opportunity to present music to people — very well-prepared, well-rehearsed, well-performed music from all eras," explained Seth Boustead, ACM's executive director. The organization hopes to begin teaching classes by May with a grand opening targeted for September 2025. The development is supported by a grant from the city's Department of Planning and Development covering up to $250,000 of the renovation costs.

When completed, The Checkout will offer intimate performances where audience members can interact with musicians, alongside community-building events like open mic and game nights. Residents interested in learning more about upcoming classes, performances, or employment opportunities with ACM can visit their website for updates on this exciting addition to Lake View's cultural landscape.
