Palmer Square Park's First Winter as Chicago's Official Arboretum Brings New Educational Programs
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·
Palmer Square Park is embracing its recent designation as Chicago's first arboretum with expanded winter programming for the community. The park received Level I arboretum accreditation from the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program in September, administered by the Morton Arboretum in suburban Lisle, making it the first Chicago Park District property to earn this prestigious recognition.
The designation recognizes Palmer Square's commitment to growing and maintaining a thriving tree canopy and preserving its diverse collection of over 28 tree varieties, including a historic elm grove. With species now clearly labeled throughout the park, the arboretum classification gives more weight to tree preservation and education in the area. The newly labeled trees will facilitate educational walks, tours, and special park district events focused on the diverse collection. This achievement represents decades of community effort led by the Homeowners Association of Palmer Square, which has been working to create a tree sanctuary since 1980. What began with just 37 trees has grown to over 200 trees today through consistent planting efforts funded by donations and community fundraisers.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the park's winter landscape and participate in upcoming educational programs that will highlight the dormant canopy.
