Historic Bronzeville Art Center Receives $2 Million Boost for Transformative Expansion

The South Side Community Art Center, a cornerstone of Bronzeville's cultural heritage, received a significant financial boost this week with a $2 million grant from the Driehaus Foundation. The funds will support the center's ambitious

5 million renovation and expansion project, which includes doubling the size of the historic landmark with a 9,700-square-foot addition.

The expansion will transform the stately 1892 brick-and-limestone former residence at 3831 S. Michigan Avenue, adding new gallery spaces, archive rooms, artist studios, meeting spaces, collection storage, and a rooftop deck with spectacular views of the neighborhood. 'This space created some of the most masterful works — some of the most amazing artists who came together,' said Executive Director Monique Brinkman-Hill, referencing luminaries like Gordon Parks, Margaret Burroughs, and Kerry James Marshall who have been connected to the center. The nation's oldest Black American art center, which opened in 1940 and was dedicated by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, has already begun installation of underground geothermal systems that will sustainably heat and cool the buildings.

Bronzeville residents can look forward to experiencing the revitalized center when construction is completed in 2027. The project not only preserves an important cultural institution but enhances its capacity to serve future generations of artists and community members. Those interested in learning more about the project or supporting the center's ongoing fundraising efforts can visit the South Side Community Art Center's website.
