Historic Erie Street Row Officially Designated as Chicago Landmark in Streeterville

In a significant victory for historic preservation, the Chicago City Council has officially approved landmark designation for the Erie Street Row at 161 E. Erie Street in Streeterville. The three limestone-clad rowhouses, originally built in 1877 following the Great Chicago Fire, stand as rare surviving examples of the neighborhood's earliest residential development.
The Italianate-style buildings, faced with Joliet limestone, represent a crucial chapter in Chicago's post-fire rebuilding and were originally homes for successful merchants and professionals. The buildings showcase fine detailing and craftsmanship in their limestone façades, which remain remarkably intact after nearly 150 Chicago winters. The landmark designation protects the Erie Street frontage while still allowing for potential development of the rear structures, maintaining the visual prominence of this historic façade among Streeterville's modern skyscrapers.
The landmark status comes after months of community advocacy led by the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents (SOAR) and preservation groups. "It's one of our last remaining buildings from the late 1800s in the neighborhood," noted SOAR board member Gail Spreen, who emphasized the structure's importance in showcasing "what this neighborhood used to be." Residents and visitors can visit this architectural gem just one block east of Michigan Avenue, where it continues to house businesses including an art gallery and yoga studio.
