The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture in Humboldt Park is marking its 25th anniversary with exciting new developments as construction begins on a stunning glass atrium for its courtyard. The $4.25 million project, part of recently approved TIF funding for Humboldt Park improvements, will enclose the museum's courtyard to create 6,000 square feet of year-round program space.

The glass atrium project follows the successful completion of the museum's outdoor educational garden and community space that opened in September as part of the institution's silver anniversary celebrations. Museum visitors can now enjoy the new outdoor area that includes a mosaic wall titled "El Llamado" (The Call) by renowned Puerto Rican artist Celso González, designed to showcase Puerto Rican heritage and history. According to museum CEO Billy Ocasio, the space can host poetry readings, outdoor workshops, book readings, and various community events. "This is a space where we could really celebrate who we are," Ocasio explained at the recent unveiling.

Community members interested in experiencing these new additions can visit the museum at 3015 W. Division St. during regular operating hours. The museum remains the only self-standing institution in the nation devoted to showcasing Puerto Rican arts and cultural exhibitions year-round, serving as a vital cultural anchor in Chicago's vibrant Humboldt Park neighborhood.
