Lawson Unveils New Lake View Community Plan Prioritizing Transit-Oriented Housing and Walkable Streets

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Lake View ·

Lake View residents now have a roadmap for their neighborhood's future with the release of Alderman Bennett Lawson's comprehensive community plan this week. The plan, developed after extensive community input, outlines strategies for thoughtful growth while preserving the neighborhood's unique character.

Residents overwhelmingly expressed desire for more housing near transit, enhanced walkability, and expanded green spaces. The final plan reflects these priorities, with guidelines focusing on transit-oriented development, fewer parking requirements, and stronger design standards. Lawson noted these guidelines, combined with citywide reforms like expanded additional dwelling units, will help Lake View add needed housing while maintaining neighborhood charm. Walkability improvements feature prominently in the plan, with proposals for wider sidewalks, raised crosswalks, better lighting, and curb bump-outs—especially around Clark Street and commercial districts. The plan also calls for reviewing high-traffic intersections and adding bus shelters at uncovered stops.

The plan acknowledges the vital role commercial districts play in Lake View's health, with over a third of local jobs in retail, hospitality, and food service. "The walkability and the businesses go hand in hand," Lawson explained. "If people feel comfortable walking around, they're more likely to explore the neighborhood—and that helps keep storefronts filled." To support local businesses, the plan proposes identifying the neighborhood's ten hardest-to-fill storefronts and working directly with owners to recruit tenants. Residents interested in learning more can visit the 44th Ward office website for details as implementation begins in the coming months.
