Oakland Park District Unveils Winter Fitness Trail at Mandrake Park
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Oakland ·
Oakland residents now have a new way to stay active during the winter months as the Chicago Park District launched a specially designed Winter Fitness Trail at Mandrake Park this week. The trail, which opened to the public on Tuesday, November 18, features weather-resistant exercise stations and informational plaques along a scenic path connecting the park's athletic facilities.
The fitness trail represents another milestone in Oakland's ongoing neighborhood revitalization efforts. Local organizations and community centers have been instrumental in establishing recreational programs for residents of all ages, from sports teams to exercise classes, continuing the area's strong comeback as a flourishing South Side community. The new installations at Mandrake Park were designed with input from residents during community planning sessions held throughout October.
"This trail gives our community another reason to enjoy outdoor recreation, even as temperatures drop," says Tameka Williams, Oakland resident and fitness enthusiast who attended Tuesday's ribbon-cutting ceremony. Residents interested in exploring the new fitness trail can join guided tours every Saturday morning at 9:00 am through December. The Oakland Community Center will also host a Winter Wellness Workshop on November 29 where participants can learn how to make the most of the new fitness amenities throughout the colder months.
