Illinois Basketball Academy Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art Facility in Near West Side

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Near West Side ·

The Near West Side is welcoming a major new recreational development as Illinois Basketball Academy (IBA) officially broke ground this week on their state-of-the-art sports facility at 1800 W. Lake Street. The project, which received final approval from the Zoning Board of Appeals last month, marks IBA's first Chicago-based location after operating successfully in the suburbs since 2003.

The expansive new facility will feature a multi-sport air dome capable of hosting basketball, soccer, lacrosse, flag football, pickleball, and volleyball events. A three-story support building will house a restaurant, concession station, lounge areas for teams between games, and office space. The project aims to create a community hub where local sports leagues can partner to facilitate tournaments, recreational leagues, training clinics, and open play sessions.

Founded in 2003, IBA has built a strong reputation providing basketball instruction to boys and girls from kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as training for college and professional players. Currently operating the 57,000 sq. ft. West Suburban Sports Complex in Lisle, this new Near West Side facility represents a significant expansion into Chicago proper. Community members interested in learning more about programs or potential partnerships can visit the IBA website for information about their planned opening celebration in early 2026.
