Art Institute Unveils Plans for Grainger Conservation Center, Enhancing Chicago's Cultural Landscape
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Loop ·
The Art Institute of Chicago has announced plans for the Grainger Center for Conservation and Science, the first purpose-built comprehensive conservation center in the museum's history. Planned to be state of the art and fully programmed, the project represents the first major renovation of conservation space in more than 25 years. The Art Institute has always been at the forefront of conservation work, having hired the museum's first paintings conservator back in 1956.
Since that first hire nearly 70 years ago, the conservation team has grown to 40 nationally and internationally renowned specialists across twelve distinct fields. "This is the most important update and enhancement in conservation science at the Art Institute since the establishment of the department 70 years ago," said Francesca Casadio, vice president and Grainger Executive Director of Conservation and Science. The new center will feature a permanent gallery dedicated to showcasing conservation innovations and processes, allowing visitors to observe conservators treating works and offering a behind-the-scenes look at art preservation.
West Loop residents and visitors will benefit from this cultural advancement when the center opens in fall 2027. The $50 million project demonstrates continued investment in Chicago's cultural institutions despite economic challenges elsewhere. Those interested in learning more about art conservation can attend upcoming public programs at the Art Institute, which regularly hosts events connecting community members with the arts and sciences that preserve our cultural heritage.
