Historic Bankers Building in The Loop Receives Landmark Status as 83.5 Million Residential Conversion Gets UnderwayBy Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/The Loop ·
The iconic Bankers Building in Chicago's Loop has officially been designated as a Chicago landmark following City Council approval on Tuesday, November 18. The 476-foot-tall Art Deco structure at 105 W. Adams St., also known as the Clark Adams Building, was the tallest building in the financial district when completed in 1927 and now stands poised for an exciting transformation as part of downtown Chicago's revival.
The landmark designation aligns with Primera Group Inc.'s planned
83.5 million adaptive reuse project, which will convert approximately 400,000 square feet of underutilized office space into 400 mixed-income residences while preserving the building's historic exterior. The project, which received $67.5 million in Tax Increment Financing support through the City's Loop Revitalization Initiative, will include 28,888 square feet of commercial space on the ground and second floors while maintaining the existing Club Quarters Hotel on floors three through ten. This development represents one of six adaptive reuse proposals that collectively will bring more than $900 million in investments and 1,765 housing units to The Loop.Designed by Burnham Brothers, Inc. (sons of eminent Chicago architect Daniel H. Burnham), the building's distinctive Art Deco features include its setbacks and light courts, decorative entrance surrounds, and projecting cast stone detailing. Loop residents and visitors are encouraged to appreciate this architectural gem during its transformation, which exemplifies Chicago's commitment to breathing new life into historic structures while creating much-needed downtown housing.
