Historic Central YMCA Building in The Loop Slated for Landmark Status as Part of Downtown Residential Revival

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/The Loop ·

The former Central YMCA Headquarters at 19 S. LaSalle St. in the Loop is on track to become an official Chicago landmark following Mayor Brandon Johnson's proposal to City Council on November 14. The historic building, constructed in 1893 and home to the YMCA's Chicago branch through the 1970s, represents an important piece of downtown Chicago's architectural heritage.

Particularly significant as one of only two remaining Loop structures designed by William Le Baron Jenney, widely recognized as "the father of the skyscraper," the landmark designation would protect the building's exterior elevations while enabling its planned transformation. The designation aligns with a $64 million office-to-residential conversion project led by Envoi Partners, which plans to convert the 159,000-square-foot structure into approximately 150–170 residential units, with a portion set aside as affordable housing. This development joins several other adaptive reuse projects transforming The Loop into a more vibrant, 24/7 neighborhood with a healthy mix of residential, commercial, and cultural spaces. Loop residents and architecture enthusiasts are encouraged to visit this historic gem while witnessing firsthand the exciting evolution of downtown Chicago's urban landscape.
