New Ravenswood Mural Takes Shape at Damen-Leland People Space
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Ravenswood ·
The Damen-Leland intersection in Ravenswood is undergoing a creative transformation as work begins on a new community mural project. The installation, adjacent to the popular Damen Leland People Space where residents frequently gather for outdoor dining and relaxation, aims to enhance connections between local artists and residents while showcasing neighborhood creativity.
Following an extensive selection process where a committee of local artists, business owners, and residents reviewed submissions, five outstanding designs were chosen for public consideration. Ravenswood residents had the opportunity to participate in the democratic process, with voting open to all 47th Ward residents age 6 and up. Among the finalists was Alex Perkins, whose design incorporates symbols specific to Ravenswood history, including the glockenspiel representing the former J.C. Deagan Musical Instrument Company on Berteau, alongside nods to local businesses such as Margie's Candies, Urban Pooch, and Spiteful Brewing. Perkins even included references to neighborhood public art, like the cicada sculptures from 2024. Recent social media photos show the mural is now in progress, with community members stopping by to observe the installation taking shape.
