Historic South Side Community Art Center Secures $2 Million Grant for Transformative Expansion
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bronzeville ·
The South Side Community Art Center in Bronzeville has received a significant boost to its ambitious renovation plans with a $2 million grant that will help transform the historic landmark. The funds will support a 9,700-square-foot addition that will effectively double the size of the facility located at 3831 S. Michigan Avenue.
The expansion will dramatically enhance the center's capabilities with new gallery spaces, archive rooms, artist studios, meeting spaces, collection storage, and a rooftop deck offering spectacular views of the neighborhood. "This space created some of the most masterful works — some of the most amazing artists who came together," said Monique Brinkman-Hill, the art center's executive director, referencing luminaries like Gordon Parks who once worked in the center's darkroom. The nation's oldest Black American art center has already begun installation of sustainable features including underground geothermal systems that will heat and cool the buildings.
Bronzeville residents can look forward to experiencing the revitalized center when construction is completed by fall 2027. The project represents another step in Bronzeville's cultural renaissance, preserving an important artistic institution while enhancing its capacity to serve future generations of artists and community members.
