Oakland Set to Benefit from Chicago's New Central Area Plan as Equitable Transit Development Expands

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Oakland ·

Oakland residents can look forward to positive neighborhood impacts as Chicago's first comprehensive downtown development plan in more than 20 years was unanimously approved by the Chicago Plan Commission. The Central Area Plan 2045 establishes a community-guided vision for downtown Chicago and adjacent neighborhoods, including areas connected to Oakland. The 20-year framework identifies more than 250 goals, actions, and strategic projects across the city, with projections anticipating significant new construction, job creation, and housing development.

The plan coincides with the success of Chicago's Equitable Transit-Oriented Development Technical Assistance Program, which has been making meaningful progress from 2023 to 2025. A

million investment in the Elevated Works technical assistance program has already ensured the success of 29 projects representing $300 million invested in Chicago communities, with several reaching groundbreaking and grand opening milestones this year. These transit-oriented developments are creating more connected neighborhoods throughout Chicago, including improved access for Oakland residents to job centers and community amenities.

Oakland community members interested in learning more about how these developments will impact their neighborhood are encouraged to participate in upcoming public engagement events. The plan, which was developed through a two-year process that included more than 10,000 participants, features key goals centered around eight planning pillars including Arts & Entertainment, Economic Development, Housing & Neighborhoods, and Transportation & Infrastructure. Residents can visit the Department of Planning and Development website for details about upcoming community input opportunities.
