Northwest Art Trail Unveils Final Sculptures Along Milwaukee Avenue in Portage Park
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Portage Park ·
Portage Park's cultural landscape is getting a vibrant boost with the completion of the Northwest Art Trail, a 2-mile arts corridor that now features all ten planned sculptures along Milwaukee Avenue. The ambitious project, which connects the Portage Park and Jefferson Park business districts, was made possible through a $300,000 capital improvement grant sponsored by state Senator Robert Martwick.
"Public art transforms neighborhoods, sparks conversation and builds community," explained Arts Alive Chicago President Cyd Smillie. The trail not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the area but also supports local businesses by increasing foot traffic. "If you can get people to walk down the street and see your storefront, they're more likely to come in," Smillie noted. Each sculpture features a brass plaque with details about the piece and artist, while trail markers help with wayfinding between installations.
Community members interested in exploring the completed art trail can find maps and detailed information about the sculptures at local businesses along the corridor. The trail's name honors the Native American portage route that once carried people and canoes between the Chicago and Des Plaines Rivers—a pathway that shaped the region long before Chicago existed. Residents can learn more about upcoming community art events by attending the next Portage Park Advisory Council meeting on November 24.
