Graceland West Kicks Off Annual Leaf Clean-Up Initiative, Enhances Neighborhood Sustainability

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Graceland West ·

Graceland West residents are rolling up their sleeves this weekend for the neighborhood's annual Volunteer Street Leaf Clean-Up initiative, which kicked off Saturday, November 15 at the intersection of Greenview and Belle Plaine. The community-driven event, organized by the Graceland West Community Association (GWCA), continues through November 23 and represents one of the neighborhood's most impactful environmental efforts.

The initiative addresses multiple community priorities including flood prevention, pedestrian safety, and winter preparedness. Last year's effort resulted in an impressive 216 bags of leaves collected, significantly reducing stormwater runoff issues while making sidewalks safer for residents. The project complements Graceland West's growing network of native plant pollinator pathway sites, which collectively absorb over 2,000 gallons of stormwater annually while providing crucial habitat for local wildlife.

Residents interested in participating can still join volunteer teams throughout the coming week by contacting the GWCA at [email protected]. The leaf clean-up initiative leads into the community's upcoming Q4 Annual Meeting on November 13, where neighborhood leaders will discuss plans for 2026 initiatives and council elections. "These volunteer efforts are what make Graceland West such a special place to live," shared a community organizer, emphasizing the neighborhood's long tradition of environmental stewardship.
