Rogers Park Gateway Transformation Nears Completion with Pollinator-Friendly 'Bee Hotel'
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Rogers Park ·
Rogers Park residents will soon enjoy a revitalized green space as Loyola University completes a significant transformation of the neighborhood's iconic gateway garden. The triangular lot at the intersection of Devon Avenue, Sheridan Road and Broadway—known for its welcome sign and recognition as the entrance to Rogers Park—is being transformed into a pollinator paradise featuring colorful native plants and a unique 'bee hotel' designed to support solitary bees and enhance local biodiversity.
The project represents a successful partnership between Loyola University and the City of Chicago. The university recently finalized a formal maintenance agreement where the Chicago Department of Transportation will install a new irrigation system while Loyola takes responsibility for planting and ongoing care. "We would get complaints about the intersection because people believed it was owned by Loyola and we were neglecting it," explained Hamlet Gonzalez, Loyola's associate vice president for Facilities. "The truth is, without an agreement and proper irrigation, our hands were tied. This partnership was instrumental in allowing us to support our mutual goals of beautification."
Residents interested in learning more about the garden's transformation can visit the site to watch progress as construction continues through November. The project creates an opportunity for community education about native pollinators and ecological restoration, with the 'bee hotel' serving as both a functional habitat and a visual reminder of the importance of urban biodiversity in Rogers Park.
