McKinley Park's Bubbly Creek Transformation: Floating Wetlands Expansion Boosts Local Biodiversity
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Mckinley Park ·
McKinley Park residents have witnessed a remarkable environmental transformation along their neighborhood's waterfront as the Shedd Aquarium and Urban Rivers continue expanding their innovative floating wetlands project on Bubbly Creek. The initiative, which began with 3,000 square feet of floating habitat in 2022, has grown substantially throughout 2025, creating a thriving ecosystem that connects the McKinley Park community with its natural waterways.
The floating wetlands at the South Branch of the Chicago River, near its confluence with the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, have been significantly expanded through the collaborative program between the Shedd Aquarium and Urban Rivers. The groups have added close to 1,500 square feet of new floating habitat this year, complementing the existing 3,000-square-foot installation. "By adding more natural greenery to the Chicago River, we aim to restore and preserve this vital resource for both people and wildlife," explained Maggie Cooper, the Shedd Aquarium's manager of conservation action.
The project has dramatically improved recreational opportunities for McKinley Park residents, making activities like fishing and paddling more inviting along what has become "a surprising biodiversity hot spot." The initiative is part of a broader vision to connect McKinley Park, Bridgeport, Chinatown, and Pilsen with a continuous riverfront trail. "One of the biggest things locals can do is just to go outside and play on the river," encouraged McKinley Park Development Council President Kate Eakin. "The more people are using the waterfront, the easier it is to say we need more of it." Residents interested in experiencing this ecological renaissance can visit the expanding wetlands area, with community paddling and educational programs continuing through the fall months.
